Wondering how to avail IRCTC travel insurance policy? Passengers traversing the vast expanse of Indian Railways can avail themselves of the IRCTC travel insurance. Travel insurance benefits are only available when tickets are booked through the official IRCTC portal. Passengers can apply for a travel policy during the booking process. The scheme is optional and exclusively provided for CNF/RAC/part CNF tickets.

Passengers booking their train tickets online can now opt for insurance coverage for injuries or fatalities during their journey by paying a nominal fee of just 35 paise (Rs 0.35). This small fee ensures the availability of insurance in case of any unfortunate incident that may occur during the journey.

Who Can Claim IRCTC Travel Insurance:

Only Indian citizens can claim insurance; this scheme does not cover foreigners.

It's crucial to note that passengers cannot opt for the scheme after making a reservation; it must be done at the time of ticket booking.

Benefits of Train Travel Insurance:

  • Coverage up to INR 10 lakh in the event of a train accident (for death or any permanent disability caused).

  • In the case of permanent disability, an insurance cover of INR 7.5 lakh and INR 2 lakh hospitalization expenses.

  • Applicable coverage for loot, robbery, and accidents.

Eligibility for IRCTC Train Travel Insurance:

  • Any passenger booking a train E-ticket through the IRCTC official website or app can opt for optional train travel insurance at a mere 68 paise.

  • Children below 5 are not eligible for this travel insurance.

  • Only Indian citizens can apply for this insurance; foreigners are not eligible.

Five Types of IRCTC Travel Coverage:

  • In the case of fatal injuries resulting in death within 12 months, claimants receive 100% of the insured amount, i.e., Rs 10,00,000.

  • Permanent total disability warrants the full insured amount.

  • Permanent partial disability makes the insured person eligible for Rs 7,50,000.

  • Minor injuries allow for medical expenses up to Rs 2,00,000.

In the unfortunate event of an insured passenger's death during a trip due to an accident, the insurance company provides Rs 10,000 for transporting mortal remains to the passenger's residence.

Step-by-Step Process: How To Choose IRCTC Travel Insurance Option

  • Passengers must select the 'Travel Insurance' option when purchasing a ticket through the official portal.

  • The travel insurance company sends an SMS and policy details to the registered email ID.
Passengers must fill out the nomination form before buying a ticket.

IRCTC Insurance: Claims Process

The passenger or their legal heir must write a detailed statement about the claims, which needs to be sent to the nearest office of the insurance company within four months of the incident.

While train journeys bring a dash of excitement, adventure and nostalgia, it is important to stay well-informed about every choice and opt for travel insurance as per your requirements.
